Chapter 1: Spies

Vanilla flew through the currents of wind that became ever so easy to glide on with practice, but had a slightly erie feeling that someone, something was watching her. It was true, in the rugged buildings along the side of the path hid many alleys that no one dared enter, even when the sun shone brightly in the sky, the alleys were pitch-black, and according to folk legend, housed many so-called, evil-spirits. Bright red eyes were often seen glaring at passerby, but no one knew who they were, or what they did, and once in a blue moon, someone would be killed by the alleys, but not a soul knew who, which gave the town the name of "Mysteria". Vanilla shivered at the thought, chills creeping down her spine, her wings twitched in fear.
"I wish Truffle were here. . .", she grumbled unhappily to herself, careful to keep the volume of her voice low, her eyes scanning the ground below her warily, yet cautious of the spies that were rumoured to pass the area quite frequently. Little did she know, that one of the agents hired to watch the selected target was watching her right now, with careful, beady eyes of greediness.
"I'll get that snowy owl for Mistress Morveux. She'll be forced to pay me with the finest of gems!" The spy cackled, a little too loudly, though. Vanilla froze cautiously, hovering in the air, but shrugged, flying very softly now, often operating under an "antelope movement", zigzagging through the air to fend off any stalkers. The spy frowned slightly, after all the self-praise she had carried out, she lost sight of the snowy owl. "No worries, Mistress. That owl-- Truffle shall be your captive in no time! Vanilla shall be slaughtered under my careful watch." The shady owl snickered with pleasure, than took off in the direction of Vanilla.

                                                *******************************

Truffle flew solemnly over the many branches that covered the area, a grim look upon his face. Something, deep down in his gizzard, he knew something terribly wrong was going to happen. Rumors had already surfaced that the Mistress of Alkirnine was scouring the land for the few subjects of the late prince, the Mistress herself was not the brightest star in the sky, both in terms of knowledge and her heart, having been born on the night of the solar eclipse, which could bless the newborn with the gift of kindness and wisdom, or the scar of being able to penetrate wounds into the feelings of others. It was said that those whom visited the Mistress never returned, only to be cast into a statue of pure gold by the Mistress' blood-red eyes, if the animal itself was lucky enough, it would be cast back into the gorm of fur and bones, but unfortunately, be sent to work in many of the Mistress' working areas, which were said to have terrible hygiene practices, many animals dying by the minute.
"Great." He grumbled.

Prologue: The Beginning

The wind howled, and two owls perched on a rigid branch, that swayed in the howling winds.

"You know, Vanilla. I think we need a break."
The figure that perched by the owl who spoke shuddered, trying to buy time.
"What do you mean, Truffle?"
Silence engulfed the two before the one called Truffle replied. "It's hard to explain, dear.", he paused, than continued. "Y'know, just a few days of separation from each other."
Vanilla bowed her head solemnly as a wave of sadness overtook the air before lofting into the air, a tear rolling down her cheek, Truffle opened his beak, only managing to sputter a "Wait!", but even that, his friend didn't hear. The dappled snowy blinked tears back, only seeing a speck fly into the horizon. He bowed his head in grief, then lofted into the crisp midnight air.
